  When I was eight, I hated piano practice – but I loved piano *playing*. When nobody told me I had to, I would sit for hours and let my fingers move of their own accord, transfixed by the sounds that appeared as if by magic. I would close my eyes, ride the sustain pedal, and marvel as slow notes melded, splintered, faded. I don’t think I ever felt more free, or more still.
  
  The sounds on these discs is what resulted when, ignorant as ever about the technical aspects of making music, lazy as ever about practice, and more in need of stillness than ever, I put my fingers on a keyboard again three decades later and let them do what they wanted, while I listened. Eight-year-old me and forty-two year old me thank you for listening, too.
